A Basic Guide to a Great Headshot Photo Session

Professional headshots are the first introduction to you, your business and your personal brand.

Around 93% of HR professionals and recruiters turn to LinkedIn to find quality candidates, 2 in 3 turn to Facebook and more than half utilize Twitter. This just proves that a headshot plays an important role in your professional life. Your headshot should be a powerful, compelling and confidence-instilling headshot that makes prospective clients, employers and partners want to reach out and connect with you.

Before you head to the studio for your professional headshot photo session, think about the things that you want others to see when they glance at your profile page.

Think about some of the characteristics that embody your personal brand. Are you a chef, an educator, a writer? Write down some keywords and phrases. If there are certain props that could help tell your story, bring them along to your session too.

We will usually take a few different shots using various outfits so that you have a good selection to choose from. If you’re going to be using your headshot on a specific social media platform, you might even want to tailor it to fit that site.

It’s important that your look matches the image you’re trying to convey.  What you wear on a daily basis is a great place to start. Solid colors are always a good choice, as are tops with strong collars and necklines. We suggest that you wear clothing that compliments your skin and eye tones and it’s best to stay away from very bold colors too. Even though you’ll only be photographed from the shoulders up, it’s important for your entire outfit is professional as you may want a shot or two that is taken further away and incorporates more of your body.

Even though this is a more professional shoot, remember to have fun. A relaxed, comfortable subject naturally exudes confidence.

I almost forgot how crazy life can become with a brand new puppy. My friends Ana&Dina recently found that out probably 5 minutes after their new puppy arrived.

Hazel, the puppy “nut” as I call her, is a pile of energy as any new healthy puppy can be. She runs around non stopping, looking for new things to play or chew on. Remember that commercial with the Duracell bunny? Yeah, that pretty much describes Hazel-nut!

Adjusting to a new pet can be challenging, it requires a lot discipline and consistent training to make sure the puppy grows up to become a well behaved and adjusted dog. They can be like toddlers requiring a lot of attention, but they will reward you with the most beautiful feelings you can experience, unconditional love. That is priceless and I wish everyone have the opportunity at some point of their lives to experience that.

Here are some images from Hazel’s photo shoot. Enjoy!

5 Tips for a Sensational Senior Photo Session

It’s Senior Photo time!

It’s completely normal to feel a little awkward when taking senior portraits. Many seniors tend to feel self-conscious about their appearance because they feel uncomfortable taking photos on their own.

Below are our top five tips for taking on your senior portrait with grace and confidence and leaving with photos that you will love for years to come.

1. Use your eyes.

Use your eyes to express emotion. When you smile naturally your whole face lights up and your eyes look bright and awake. Before the photo session practice smiling in the mirror and use different expressions to see what looks best.

2. Relax.

Great photos happen when the subject is relaxed and confident. Let the excitement of you photo session show through the lens as you take a moment and breathe, relax and just have fun. You may feel silly during this process but we will do everything we can to help you feel more comfortable.

3. Breathe.

This may sound obvious but breathing is key to capturing a natural look. Take time to  practice taking a deep breath while smiling in front of the mirror.  Slowly release the air while holding the smile and notice how your face and eyes settle into a natural and relaxed expression. Allow your eyes to “smile” by focusing on the apples of your cheeks pressing upwards. When in doubt, just breathe.

4. Move.

Staying stationary can sometimes produce a very staged and cheesy look. Just because you are sitting or standing still doesn’t mean you can’t change the angle of your body to create a look that is fresh and inspired. Try leaning into the camera slightly to appear more engaged, shift your weight from left to right, or simply move your chin slightly up and down for different shots as this gives us a variety of facial expressions to work with.

5. Beautify.

This goes for everyone. Ladies, spend some extra time getting your hair blown out, get your makeup done and choose an outfit that makes you look and feel your best. As for the men, take a shower and shave. When you look your best, you feel your best and when you feel your best, you are naturally more confident. Go the extra mile to walk into your senior session feeling confident, attractive, prepared, and inspired.

Tips on Preparing for Your Maternity Photo Session

How to Prepare and What to Bring to a Maternity Photo Session

Bringing a baby into the world is a wonderful life event that should be captured. It’s a time you are going to want to remember and share with your little one once they are a bit older. If you are thinking about or have recently booked a pregnancy photo session then the below tips should come in handy as your prepare for your session.

1.Schedule your session between 31 and 36 weeks as your tummy should have popped and have a beautiful shape. By booking your maternity session during this time you are also past the discomfort and bloating that happens earlier in the pregnancy.

2. We know how important it is to moisturize those knees, elbows and belly but we recommend you do so 1 – 2 hours before the session to avoid any shininess or sticky clothes. You should also avoid wearing any tight fitting watches or bracelets that might leave marks on your skin.

3. Treat yourself to a neutral or light colored manicure 1 – 2 days prior to your maternity session so that you can take some beautiful shots with your hands on your tummy.

4. If you already have some cute baby items such as shoes, hats, toys, blankets or onesies, bring them along as they make for adorable props. The same applies to family heirlooms. If you have a special locket or photo that you would like to use, bring it along too.

5. More and more moms are using their ultrasound photos in their photo sessions. If you aren’t too sure whether you want to use it or not, bring it to the shoot anyway and decide on the day.

6. Take the time to pick the right outfit for the maternity shoot. You should of course be comfortable but make sure that your clothing doesn’t detract from your tummy’s shape and your natural glow. Avoid large, bold patterns or clothing that is too loose. Empire waists, drawstrings, flowing tops and wrap dresses are perfect for enhancing your shape.

Should I have a party for my Baby’s First Year Birthday?

Does the first birthday party matter?

Of course it does! Yeah, the baby probably will have no memory of it but he will have the images of all the people that love him most coming together to celebrate his or her first year of life. What a better gift for this little tiny being?

Who doesn’t hold close images of yourself as a tiny baby? Black and white faded images or images falling out of an album that barely is holding together. We all cherish those memories even thought we don’t remember them, but they show where we came from and the people that loved and cared for us. And that alone to is precious.

Another possibility to consider is that the first birthday celebration might not be really for the baby. The party might be about the two people and the family and friends that surrounds those people. When a couple becomes parents, their whole life turns upside down and they might stop to do the things they were used to like hanging out with their friends as their time is consumed learning and caring for the new baby. A birthday party might just give them a way to celebrate with their family with friends.

Either way, the first birthday or second or any birthday will only happen once on your child’s life, so make a point to create memories the best way you can, being it a big party or just a party of three!!

Check out Alex’s First Birthday party! It was amazing!! The theme of the party was based on a traditional folk festival that happens in Brazil every June called “Festa Junina”.

“Festa Junina is the term used to describe the traditional festivities that happen at the beginning of the Brazilian winter in June. It is a month to commemorate some of the most famous saints for Catholics; namely Saint Anthony, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Peter. It is also a month to honor rain, the harvest season and marital union. Those attending will be treated to typical Brazilian food, will dress up like farmers, enjoy bonfires and dance the quadrilha. After Carnival, it is the second most important popular celebration in Brazilian culture.” (culturetrip.com)

Top Tips for Taking Photos Indoors

Simple but Effective Tips for Taking Photos Indoors.

Whether it’s because the weather took a turn for the worst or you simply found the perfect indoor setting for your next photo session, there are a few things you need to be aware of when taking photos indoors.

  1. Work with windows. Natural light does wonders for photos. If you can find a window or open door and use that light as front, side or back lighting it will give your photos a really nice look and feel. It also brings natural warmth to your images.
  2. Pay attention to your surroundings. While shooting photos inside a home gives you loads of great backdrops and props to work with, you might need to move a few things around before your session. Make sure that your space isn’t cluttered as this can shift the focus in the photo.
  3. Check the light sources. It’s very important to only stick to one light source. If you’re shooting photos in a room with strong overhead lights but there are also several windows, rather opt for the natural light and switch off any other light sources.
  4. Discover your space. If you’re shooting in an indoor setting, take a proper walk around the area and see if there aren’t areas that you can shoot in that you never thought of before. This is your chance to get creative.
  5. What you wear still matters. You will often come across advice on what to wear when taking photos outside but what you wear to an indoor photo session matters just as much. Your clothing should complement your backdrop and the overall mood that you’re trying to create.

Taking photos indoors might be a little more work sometimes but it’s totally worth it.

Tips for Beautiful Winter Photos | Chelmsford Photographer

mother and daughter family portraitThere is a special kind of magic that comes with outdoor, winter photo sessions. The snow lightly falling and icicles hanging from the branches create a lovely backdrop for any photo session. Here are some tips to make your winter or fall photo sessions go smoothly.

  1. Dress warmly. You will be surprised at how often this is overlooked. Since you’ll be standing outside for a long period of time, short sleeves, thin fabrics, and open toe shoes will not be comfortable for very long. Shivering makes it hard to look happy and pose properly.
  2. Wear sunscreen. Protecting your skin should be a priority throughout the year, not just in summer. Use a good moisturizer to protect your skin from chilly winds.
  3. Watch the weather. Warmer days may seem more pleasant but melting snow can change the entire look of your backdrop. If you are looking for light snow flurries, try and keep an eye on the weather forecast to make sure that you don’t end up with melting or heavy snow.
  4. Be flexible. If the weather isn’t exactly what you had hoped for, see if you can still make the photo session work. If you are however scheduling this session in advance, you may just have to work with the weather on that particular day.
  5. Incorporate color. Even though fall and winter have some amazing colors to work with, why not wear a splash of color to really stand out in your photos? For example, vibrant shades of blues and greens look amazing amongst crunchy brown leaves.
  6. Plan your day. Taking your photos just after the sun rises or just before it sets will provide you with amazing lighting so try and plan your session around those times.

Take some hot tea or coffee along to make your photo session even more enjoyable and get ready for some beautiful results.
